What should you know about pacemaker and MRI scan?

An MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radiofrequency energy. Older or non-compatible pacemaker systems may respond to the environment in ways that affect the device or lead function. Many newer systems are designed for MRI under specified conditions. The team needs the exact generator and lead information, implant history and reason for the scan. The device may be checked before and after imaging, and its settings may be adjusted temporarily according to the manufacturer’s conditions.

Tell the referring clinician and MRI service that you have a pacemaker; do not rely on the appointment form alone. Bring your device identification card and details of any abandoned or removed leads. The cardiology and radiology teams decide whether the scan can proceed, which scanner conditions apply and what monitoring is needed. During or after imaging, tell staff immediately about chest discomfort, dizziness, faintness, palpitations, unusual warmth near the device or shortness of breath. Seek urgent medical help for fainting, severe chest pain, severe breathlessness or a sustained fast or irregular heartbeat. These symptoms need assessment even if the scan has already finished.

Ask what pacemaker and lead model you have, whether the complete system is approved for MRI under particular conditions, who will monitor you, whether settings will change, and when the device will be checked afterwards. Ask what alternative scan would answer the clinical question if MRI is unsuitable.
