What should you know about OTC milia treatment?

Milia are small, firm, white or yellowish cysts formed from trapped keratin beneath the skin surface. They commonly appear around the eyelids, cheeks, or nose and are different from pus-filled spots. A cluster of white bumps is not always milia, so changes in colour, pain, or behaviour deserve a closer look.

Cleanse gently, moisturise with a non-comedogenic product, and avoid picking, needles, harsh scrubs, or squeezing. Sun protection can reduce contrast between the bumps and surrounding skin. If milia keep appearing, review heavy creams or occlusive products used around the area with a pharmacist or dermatologist.

A clinician may consider a topical retinoid for selected cases, especially when new cysts recur, but these products can irritate skin and are not suitable for everyone. Professional curettage and cautery can remove an individual persistent cyst; treatment around the eye needs particular care.

Arrange an assessment if a bump is painful, red, rapidly changing, bleeding, affecting vision, or not behaving like a typical stable white cyst. Seek advice before treating eyelid lesions yourself. Medical review is also sensible when many bumps develop suddenly or home care causes burning, swelling, or a persistent rash.

Ask whether the bumps are milia, whether a retinoid is suitable for your skin and health, and what product changes might reduce recurrence. If removal is planned, ask about eye-area precautions, aftercare, and signs of infection.
