What should you know about an oral allergy syndrome test?

Oral allergy syndrome, also called pollen-food allergy syndrome, can cause itching or tingling in the lips, mouth, or throat after certain raw fruits, vegetables, or nuts. A clinician will ask which foods caused symptoms, whether cooking changes the reaction, and whether hay fever or other allergies are present. Skin-prick or blood testing may look for related pollen or food sensitisation. A result supports the history but does not interpret it alone.

Write down the food, amount, preparation, timing, and symptoms for each episode. Bring a list of medicines and ask whether any should be paused before skin testing. Do not deliberately eat a suspected trigger to test yourself. Until reviewed, avoid foods that repeatedly cause symptoms and ask about safer cooked alternatives. Your clinician may discuss related allergic rhinitis or food allergy when deciding whether further assessment is useful.

Call emergency services if symptoms progress beyond the mouth to breathing difficulty, throat tightness, widespread hives, dizziness, faintness, or repeated vomiting. These signs can indicate anaphylaxis and need urgent treatment. Arrange a routine review for recurring reactions, symptoms with cooked foods, or reactions that seem stronger or different from previous episodes.

Ask which test is appropriate, whether your medicines affect the result, whether an emergency action plan is needed, and which foods should be avoided or cooked.
