Milia develop when keratin becomes enclosed beneath the outer layer of skin. The result is often a smooth white or yellow-white bead without the surrounding redness associated with an inflamed spot. Facial position, texture, and symptoms matter: a painful, warm, draining, crusted, or rapidly changing lesion may not be milia. Skin bumps and whiteheads can resemble it, so a clinician can examine a persistent or uncertain mark.

Use a mild cleanser and moisturiser, avoid abrasive scrubs, and do not try to extract the bump with a pin or fingernails. Review recent changes such as heavy creams, irritation, a peel, or an injury. If the spot remains unwanted, a dermatologist can confirm it and discuss controlled removal. A topical retinoid may be considered for some patterns, but facial sensitivity, pregnancy, and other medicines affect whether it is suitable.
