What should you know about a nose allergy test?

The test does not examine the inside of your nose for a blockage, and it does not by itself confirm that every episode of congestion is caused by allergy.

Testing commonly uses a skin prick test or an allergy blood test. A skin test places tiny amounts of selected allergens on or just under the skin, then checks for a local reaction. A blood test measures allergy-related antibodies to particular allergens.

A positive result shows sensitivity to an allergen; your symptoms and exposure history determine whether that allergen is actually relevant. A negative result may make a tested allergy less likely, but it cannot explain every possible cause of nasal symptoms. Nasal allergy is often called allergic rhinitis and may involve dust mites, pets or seasonal pollens.

Before testing, tell the clinician about your symptoms, when they occur, where you notice them, and any medicines or previous allergic reactions. Some medicines can affect skin-test results, so ask whether any should be paused; do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice.

Bring a list of suspected triggers and describe any eye symptoms, cough or wheeze as well as nasal symptoms. After the result, use the identified trigger only as one part of the plan: reducing exposure, treating inflammation and checking for another diagnosis may all be considered. Allergic conjunctivitis can occur alongside nasal allergy, while persistent facial pressure may need assessment for chronic sinusitis.

Seek emergency help immediately for trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives after an exposure or during testing. These can be signs of anaphylaxis and need urgent treatment.

Arrange a medical review for one-sided persistent blockage, repeated nosebleeds, fever, severe facial pain, reduced sense of smell that does not improve, or symptoms that disturb sleep despite treatment. Wheezing or chest tightness deserves prompt attention because nasal allergy can coexist with asthma.

Ask which allergens will be tested, whether a skin or blood test fits your symptoms, how medicines could affect the result, and what a positive result would change in your treatment plan. You can also ask whether food allergy or another nasal condition needs separate assessment.
