What should you know about new coronavirus?

COVID-19 may cause fever, cough, fatigue, headache or a general feeling of being unwell. Some infections cause few symptoms, while others affect the lungs and may lead to pneumonia. Symptoms can resemble influenza, a common cold or other respiratory illness, so symptoms alone cannot confirm the cause. A person may spread the virus before feeling ill or while symptoms are mild.

If you develop respiratory symptoms, reduce close contact, improve airflow indoors and follow current local advice about testing and staying home. Rest and drink enough fluid to avoid dehydration. Take medicines only as directed and check before combining products with the same ingredient. People who are older, pregnant or living with chronic illness may need early medical advice because their risk of complications can differ.

Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, collapse, inability to wake, or blue or grey lips. Arrange prompt assessment for worsening breathlessness, persistent fever, marked weakness, dehydration or symptoms that return after improvement. Do not wait for a home test result if serious symptoms are present.
