Neonatal Milia Treatment: What to Know

Short answer
Neonatal milia usually need gentle skin care rather than active treatment, and they should not be squeezed, scraped or treated with adult acne products.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Usual approach
- Gentle care and observation are generally preferred.
- Avoid
- Do not squeeze, scrape or use adult acne products.
What milia are
Milia are tiny, firm, pearly white or yellow bumps formed when keratin becomes trapped just beneath the surface of the skin. In newborns they commonly appear on the nose, cheeks, chin or around the eyes. They are usually not inflamed, tender or itchy.
A baby can have other kinds of skin bumps or whiteheads that look similar. Redness, pus, spreading change, fever or discomfort makes a different diagnosis more likely and deserves medical review rather than home treatment.
Safe care
Wash the baby with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser when needed, then pat the skin dry. Avoid heavy oils, scrubs, adhesive patches and picking. Keep products away from the eyes and do not try to open the bumps with a needle or fingernail.
Topical Retinoids are not a routine choice for neonatal milia and should never be borrowed from an adult’s prescription. Curettage And Cautery are clinician procedures used only when a diagnosis and a clear reason support them; they are not home remedies.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if bumps become red, swollen, crusted, painful or drain fluid, or if they involve the eye itself. Seek urgent help for fever, poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, breathing difficulty or a rapidly changing rash in a newborn.
Questions to ask
Do these bumps fit milia, or could they be infection or another rash? Which cleanser and moisturiser are suitable? What change would mean the baby needs review, and is any procedure actually necessary?
