Natural Hair Shedding

Short answer
Natural hair shedding can be part of the hair cycle, but persistent, heavy or patchy change deserves an assessment to find its cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding shedding
Hair cycles through growth, rest and release, so seeing hairs on a pillow, brush or during washing can happen without a scalp disease. A change becomes more meaningful when the part looks wider, the hairline recedes, the ponytail feels smaller or the scalp becomes visible. Telogen effluvium may cause diffuse shedding after a trigger, while male pattern hair loss and female pattern hair loss more often create a gradual distribution. Alopecia areata may form smooth patches.
Look at the scalp as well as the fallen hairs. Scale, redness, tenderness, broken hairs or pustules suggest that the issue may involve the scalp or hair shaft rather than ordinary cycling.
How to monitor and protect hair
Keep a simple record of when shedding changed, recent illness, stress, weight change, medicines and hairstyle tension. Photograph the part and hairline in consistent light. Detangle from the ends, reduce high heat and avoid tight styles that pull. Do not stop a prescribed medicine or begin supplements based only on shedding; discuss the timing with a clinician. A focused examination can separate shedding from progressive follicle miniaturisation.
Changes that need attention
Arrange care for bald patches, rapid progression, scalp pain, marked itch, scaling, crusting, pus or scarring. Seek prompt review when shedding occurs with eyebrow loss, fever or feeling unwell. A child with scalp scale and hair loss should be assessed because scalp ringworm needs specific treatment.
Questions worth asking
Ask whether your change is shedding, breakage or patterned loss, what trigger is most plausible, and whether any examination or tests are useful. Ask how long recovery may take and what signs would mean the plan needs changing.

Questions people ask
Is seeing hair during washing always abnormal?
No. Hair release is part of the normal cycle, but a sustained change in density or pattern should be reviewed.
Can stress cause shedding?
A significant physical or emotional strain can precede diffuse shedding, although other causes should also be considered.
