What should you know about multi-level ACDF?

Through an approach at the front of the neck, the surgeon removes discs or bone affecting nearby nerves or the spinal cord. Spacers are placed between the vertebrae, and a plate and screws may hold the area steady. A PEEK spinal cage is one type of spacer that may be selected. Over time, bone is intended to grow across the treated levels, creating a cervical fusion. The operation may be discussed for cervical radiculopathy or cervical spondylosis when symptoms and examination findings support it.

Before surgery, share all medicines, allergies, smoking or nicotine use, swallowing problems, and previous neck operations. Arrange help with meals, transport, and heavier tasks after discharge. Follow instructions about wound care, walking, neck movement, lifting, and any collar. Swallowing discomfort or a hoarse voice can occur after the front-of-neck approach; report symptoms that are severe, worsening, or preventing fluids. Attend follow-up visits so healing, nerve function, and implant position can be assessed.

Contact the surgical team promptly for fever, increasing wound redness or drainage, new arm weakness, worsening numbness, or pain that is not controlled as advised. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, rapidly increasing neck swelling, inability to swallow liquids, or new loss of balance or bladder control. Do not wait for a routine appointment when neurological symptoms appear suddenly.
