Can you have an MRI scan without a referral?

MRI is not one single examination. The body region, sequences, use of contrast and comparison with earlier images are chosen according to symptoms and the clinical question. A referral gives the radiology team that context and identifies findings that may need urgent communication.

A scan arranged without a clinician may produce a report that is difficult to interpret without examination findings or previous records. An abnormal result can lead to further imaging, specialist review or a biopsy, while a normal result may not explain every symptom. Local centres set their own requirements and may ask for medical details before booking.

Ask the imaging centre whether it accepts self-requested appointments, which body areas it scans, and what safety information it needs. Share your symptoms, relevant diagnoses, previous operations, medicines, pregnancy status, kidney problems and any implant or metal fragment.

If possible, speak with a clinician first so the scan matches the problem being assessed. Take earlier reports or images to the appointment when requested. Do not delay urgent assessment while trying to arrange private imaging; sudden neurological changes, severe breathing trouble or a sudden severe headache need prompt medical attention.

Seek urgent medical care for a new seizure, sudden weakness or numbness, difficulty speaking, confusion, severe breathing difficulty or a sudden severe headache. For persistent or worsening symptoms without these warning signs, arrange a clinical assessment so the need and timing of imaging can be decided.
