What does an MRI scan machine look like?

Short answer

An MRI scan machine looks like a short tunnel inside a large round magnet, with a bed that moves through its centre.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main parts
A movable table, circular magnet, and signal coil
During imaging
You remain still while sounds are produced
Safety step
Complete a full implant and metal check

What you will see

The scanner has a padded table, a circular opening, and room around the head or body being examined. The radiographer operates it from a nearby room and can speak with you through an intercom. Coils may be placed around the body part to help collect the signals used to make images. The table may move in and out several times as different views are recorded.

The space can feel enclosed, although both ends of the tunnel are open. The equipment makes repeated loud tapping, thumping, or humming sounds. These sounds are expected, and earplugs or headphones can help. You can usually communicate with staff and may have a call device for assistance.

How to prepare

Wear simple clothing without metal and leave jewellery, keys, phones, bank cards, and hair accessories outside the scan room. Complete the safety questionnaire carefully. Mention any implanted device, shrapnel, surgical clip, medication pump, hearing device, or metal in your eye. Tell staff if enclosed spaces worry you; they can discuss positioning, reassurance, or other arrangements before the appointment. Follow specific instructions if contrast or fasting is planned.

When to seek care

Tell the team immediately if you feel burning, pulling, chest discomfort, or sudden distress during the scan. After contrast, report hives, facial swelling, breathing trouble, or faintness urgently. Separately, seek urgent care for a seizure, sudden one-sided weakness, new confusion, or a severe sudden headache rather than waiting for routine results.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your head or whole body will enter the tunnel, how long you should expect to remain still, and whether contrast is needed. Ask what support is available if you feel claustrophobic and how results will be shared.

Questions people ask

Can I see the radiographer during an MRI?

The radiographer is nearby, monitors the scan, and can communicate with you through an intercom.

What if I feel anxious in the tunnel?

Tell the imaging team beforehand so they can explain the process and discuss suitable support.
