What should you know about hair fall during breastfeeding?

Short answer
Hair shedding during breastfeeding can follow the hormonal changes of pregnancy and childbirth, but marked or persistent loss should be assessed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common pattern
- Diffuse shedding can follow the postpartum hair-cycle shift.
- Gentle care
- Avoid tight styles, harsh processing and unnecessary heat.
- Breastfeeding
- Check medicines and supplements for lactation suitability.
Why shedding can happen
Pregnancy can keep more hairs in the growing phase. After delivery, some of those hairs move into a resting phase and shed together, which may make hair come out in the shower or on a brush. Breastfeeding itself does not explain every case. Sleep disruption, nutritional strain, thyroid problems, illness and emotional stress can also affect the hair cycle. This pattern is often called [Telogen Effluvium](/conditions/telogen-effluvium/). Hair loss can also have other causes, including [Female Pattern Hair Loss](/conditions/female-pattern-hair-loss/) or [Alopecia Areata](/conditions/alopecia-areata/).
Supporting your hair and scalp
Eat regular balanced meals, include protein and iron-containing foods, and discuss supplements with a clinician rather than taking high-dose products without advice. Use a wide-toothed comb, avoid tight styles and reduce heat or chemical processing while the scalp feels tender. Gentle care will not stop a hormonal hair-cycle shift, but it can limit breakage and traction. Tell your doctor that you are breastfeeding before starting medicines or supplements; some treatments may not be suitable during lactation.
When to seek care
Book an assessment for bald patches, a widening part, scalp scaling, pain, pus, broken hairs, or loss that continues without improvement. Seek prompt care if hair loss occurs with severe fatigue, palpitations, weight change or other signs of illness. A scaly, inflamed scalp may need evaluation for [Scalp Ringworm](/conditions/scalp-ringworm/), while tight hairstyles can contribute to [Traction Alopecia](/conditions/traction-alopecia/).
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether you need an examination or blood tests, which nutrients or medicines are appropriate while breastfeeding, and when regrowth should be reviewed. Mention family patterns of thinning, scalp symptoms, recent illness, delivery changes and any new medication.

Questions people ask
Does breastfeeding always cause hair loss?
No. Shedding may follow pregnancy and childbirth, but other medical or hair-related causes are possible.
Can I take a hair-growth medicine while breastfeeding?
Do not start one without a clinician’s advice because suitability depends on the medicine and lactation.
