What should you know about milia warts?

They commonly appear on the eyelids, cheeks, nose or other areas of the face. A milium is usually smooth and dome-shaped, with a pearl-like surface. Unlike many warts, milia are not caused by a virus and are not spread by touching. They may occur after skin irritation or injury, or without an obvious trigger. Their appearance can overlap with whiteheads and other skin bumps, so a clinician may examine the surface before choosing treatment.

Use a gentle cleanser, avoid harsh scrubs, and protect exposed skin from sun irritation. Do not pierce, scrape or pick the bump, especially near the eye, because this can cause infection or a lasting mark. If the bumps persist or bother you, a dermatologist may remove them with a carefully controlled procedure. In selected cases, a prescribed topical retinoid may help the skin shed trapped cells; use it only as directed and keep it away from the eyes.

Arrange an examination if a bump is painful, rapidly changing, bleeding, crusting, inflamed or affecting vision. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, pus, fever or marked swelling. A new cluster that does not resemble your usual milia also deserves review, because several conditions can create pale facial bumps.
