What should you know about milia types?

Short answer

Milia types are grouped by how they arise, and the pattern helps clinicians choose observation, skincare advice, or removal.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Primary pattern
Cysts forming without an obvious injury
Secondary pattern
Cysts after skin damage or irritation

The main patterns

Primary milia develop when skin cells become trapped in small cysts, commonly on the face and around the eyes. Secondary milia form after skin has been damaged or irritated, such as after a blister, rash, or procedure. The surface can look similar even though the background differs.

Some people have a few isolated bumps, while others develop clusters across the eyelids or cheeks. Milia in infants are a separate common pattern and often settle with time. A white bump is not automatically milia: whiteheads and other lesions can look alike.

Matching care to the pattern

Do not pick or lance any type at home. Gentle cleansing and avoiding thick, irritating products can reduce unnecessary inflammation, but these measures may not remove an established cyst. A dermatologist can discuss observation, a carefully selected topical retinoid, or controlled extraction and curettage and cautery when appropriate.

Signs that need review

Arrange a clinical assessment if the diagnosis is uncertain, the bumps follow an injury or procedure, or they keep returning. Prompt review is sensible for tenderness, spreading redness, bleeding, crusting, quick enlargement, or changes near the eye accompanied by swelling or vision symptoms.

What to clarify

Ask which pattern best fits your skin, whether an earlier rash or procedure matters, and whether any treatment could worsen irritation or pigmentation. Ask how long to observe before considering removal and how to care for the area afterward.

Questions people ask

Are all milia the same?

No. Their appearance can be alike, but primary and secondary milia have different backgrounds and may need different assessment.

Can milia be mistaken for whiteheads?

Yes. A clinician can tell them apart by examining the bump rather than relying only on its colour.
