What should you know about milia seed on eyelid?

Milia are tiny white or cream bumps formed when keratin becomes trapped just beneath the skin. They can appear on the eyelid or along its edge and often feel smooth rather than inflamed. Unlike a pimple, a milia seed usually has no open pore and is not caused by dirt. A cluster of white bumps may also be another type of skin bump, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

The thin skin around the eye needs extra care. Rubbing, heavy eye products, irritation, or a recent skin injury can make the area more noticeable. Milia are not contagious, and an isolated bump does not normally affect vision.

Leave the bump alone, cleanse gently, and avoid needles, fingernails, harsh scrubs, and squeezing near the eye. Choose non-irritating products and keep creams from collecting along the lash line. If the spot persists or bothers you cosmetically, a dermatologist can confirm that it is milia and discuss careful removal. A trained clinician may use a sterile opening and extraction; curettage and cautery are other procedures that may be considered for selected lesions. Topical retinoids are not suitable for everyone, especially close to the eye, so do not apply one there without medical guidance.

Arrange an assessment if the bump changes quickly, bleeds, crusts, becomes painful, or is joined by persistent redness or discharge. Seek prompt eye care for vision change, marked swelling, severe eye pain, or light sensitivity. A clinician should also examine a bump that sits directly on the eyelid margin or repeatedly returns after treatment, because the diagnosis and safest approach may differ.
