Milia on the nose: what to know

A nasal milium often appears as a smooth white or skin-coloured bead that does not flatten when pressed. It develops when surface skin cells become enclosed rather than shedding normally. Sun-related skin change, irritation, healing after an injury, or rich products may play a part, although a clear cause is not always found.

The nose has visible pores and oil, which can make milia easy to confuse with [Whiteheads](/symptoms/whiteheads/) or other [Skin Bumps](/symptoms/skin-bumps/). An examination can distinguish these from [Milia](/conditions/milia/) without guesswork.

Wash gently and avoid grainy scrubs, squeezing, and attempts to pierce the bump. The nose is a prominent area, and a small wound can become inflamed or leave a visible mark. Arrange assessment when several new bumps appear after a cosmetic product or procedure, or when the diagnosis is uncertain. Redness that spreads with warmth or swelling needs prompt attention.
