Milia on the Lips: Treatment Options

A dermatologist first checks whether the pale bump is milia rather than a whitehead, irritated skin, or another lesion. The outer lip, vermilion border, and inner lip have different tissue, so a treatment suitable for one area may be unsuitable for another.

A stable, harmless-looking milium may be monitored if it causes no concern. Treatment becomes more reasonable when it persists, catches on products, or affects appearance. The clinician considers depth, number of lesions, skin tone, history of scarring, and the risk of irritation.

Professional extraction can open and release a confirmed superficial milium using clean, controlled technique. Curettage and cautery is another procedure a dermatologist may consider; it removes the lesion while using cautery to control the treated surface. These methods should not be attempted at home.

A topical retinoid may help selected cases by changing how skin cells shed, but it can cause dryness, peeling, and sensitivity. Use it only with specific medical instructions, especially near the mouth, and tell the clinician about pregnancy, breastfeeding, or other medicines when relevant.

Have the area examined if a presumed milium is painful, bleeding, crusted, ulcerated, rapidly changing, or surrounded by persistent swelling. An assessment is also appropriate before treatment if the bump is on the inner lip or its diagnosis is uncertain.

Ask which procedure fits the exact lip location, what aftercare is required, how irritation will be managed, and whether monitoring is a reasonable alternative.
