What Causes Milia on the Lips?

Keratin normally reaches the skin surface as skin cells shed. When it becomes enclosed in a small pocket, a firm pale bump called milia can appear. Around the lips, friction, dryness, inflammation, cosmetic products, or a previous injury may make trapping more likely, although a clear trigger is often absent.

Not every white spot is milia. Whiteheads, irritation, blocked glands, and other lesions can resemble them. The texture, exact location, duration, and whether there is pain or surface breakdown help a clinician narrow the possibilities.

Use a mild cleanser and a simple, non-stinging moisturiser. Remove lip products gently and avoid rubbing, picking, abrasive scrubs, and attempts to open the bump. Reducing repeated irritation may prevent the area from becoming inflamed, but it may not remove an established cyst.

If the bump remains, a dermatologist can confirm the cause and discuss professional extraction or curettage and cautery. A topical retinoid can sometimes help selected keratin-blockage patterns, but treatment around the mouth needs careful instructions.

Seek medical advice for a bump that bleeds, crusts, ulcerates, becomes painful, changes noticeably, or enlarges quickly. Persistent swelling, clusters that follow a new product, or uncertainty about a lesion inside the mouth also warrant an examination rather than home treatment.

Ask whether a product, injury, or inflammatory condition could be contributing, how the diagnosis was made, and which prevention or removal option fits the lip’s sensitive skin.
