Milia on the Lip Line: What to Know

Milia form when keratin, a protein found in skin, becomes trapped beneath the surface. They often look like smooth white or cream beads and may feel harder than a pimple. A bump on the lip line can also be another type of skin bump or a whitehead, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Milia are generally not caused by poor hygiene and are not contagious. They may remain unchanged for a while, especially when they are deep or repeatedly irritated by rubbing, shaving, cosmetics, or lip products.

Clean the area gently, avoid picking or pinching it, and choose non-irritating lip products. Do not pierce the bump with a needle or use strong acids near the mouth; these actions can cause inflammation, infection, or a lasting mark.

If the spot persists or bothers you, a dermatologist can check whether it is milia and discuss controlled removal. Options may include professional extraction, curettage and cautery, or a carefully selected topical retinoid for suitable skin. Follow product directions and keep prescription treatments away from the inner lip unless specifically instructed.

Arrange a clinical review if the bump grows, bleeds, becomes painful, forms a sore, changes colour, or keeps returning in the same area. Seek prompt advice when several new lesions appear quickly or when swelling affects eating or speaking, because those features are less typical of simple milia.
