Milia on Hands: Treatment and Care

On the hand, a milium may be a tiny white, cream, or skin-toned dome that feels harder than the surrounding skin. Repeated washing, friction, dry skin, or recovery from a small injury can alter the surface and make a bump stand out. Hands also develop calluses, warts, eczema changes, and other lesions, so location alone does not establish the diagnosis.

A clinician considers the surface, firmness, number of bumps, and symptoms. Milia are often not sore, while pain, scaling, cracking, or rapid change may suggest another explanation or irritation that needs attention.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser after washing and protect the area from ongoing rubbing. Do not pierce or shave the bump, and avoid rough pumice stones or concentrated exfoliants over it. Hand tools and everyday surfaces can introduce germs into broken skin.

If treatment is wanted, dermatology removal can release the trapped material through a controlled sterile opening. Curettage and cautery are options a clinician may consider for selected lesions. A topical retinoid is not suitable for every hand bump and can cause dryness, so use it only as directed.

Have the spot examined if it becomes painful, inflamed, ulcerated, crusted, or starts bleeding. Arrange care if multiple bumps keep appearing, the diagnosis is unclear, or treatment at home has damaged the skin. Redness spreading from a wound, pus, fever, or reduced hand movement needs prompt medical attention.

Ask whether the lesion is milia or a hand condition with a different treatment, whether removal could affect hand function, and how to moisturise during healing. Mention detergents, gloves, occupational friction, and any skin products you use.
