Milia on the Forehead: Treatment Options

A forehead milium often appears as a smooth, pearly white or skin-coloured bump. It is formed when keratin becomes enclosed under the outer layer of skin, rather than when a pore fills with typical acne material. Thick creams, irritation, sun exposure, or skin healing after inflammation may be relevant, although a visible bump cannot be diagnosed from colour alone.

Because whiteheads and other skin bumps can resemble milia, a dermatologist may use close visual examination and the bump's texture to distinguish them. This is especially useful when several lesions appear together or when acne products have not helped.

Leave the bump intact and wash with a gentle cleanser. Avoid squeezing, scraping, or applying strong acids near the hairline without advice. These actions can inflame the forehead and leave pigment changes or scarring.

For a confirmed lesion, a clinician may open and lift out the keratin using sterile instruments. Curettage and cautery may be discussed in selected cases. A topical retinoid can suit some people, but it may irritate skin and should be chosen with attention to pregnancy, sensitivity, and the location near the eyes.

Book a dermatology review if the bump grows, becomes tender, crusted, itchy, red, or fails to settle. Seek quicker care for swelling around the eye, spreading warmth, discharge, or a lesion that bleeds without being picked. A new or changing forehead spot deserves a diagnosis before cosmetic treatment.
