Short answer

Milia on the feet are small, firm, keratin-filled cysts that should not be squeezed or cut at home.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the bumps may mean

A milium is a tiny pocket of trapped keratin beneath the surface of the skin. On a foot, pressure from walking, rubbing from footwear, dry skin, or a previous irritation can make a bump more noticeable. It may look white or skin-coloured and usually feels firm rather than soft. A similar-looking spot can have another cause, so a clinician may inspect its surface and location before calling it milia.

Milia are different from pus-filled spots and from open comedones. Do not assume every pale bump is a whitehead; the surrounding redness, tenderness, scale, and exact position help guide the assessment.

Practical next steps

Keep the area clean, use a bland moisturiser for rough surrounding skin, and choose footwear that does not rub the spot. Avoid needles, blades, abrasive scrubs, and forceful squeezing because these can cause an open wound, infection, or a lasting mark.

If the bump remains bothersome, a dermatologist can confirm the diagnosis and remove selected milia with a sterile technique. A prescribed topical retinoid may be considered for some patterns, but foot skin and the reason for the bump matter, so do not borrow a product intended for another body area.

When to seek medical care

Arrange an assessment if the spot is painful, warm, swollen, bleeding, rapidly changing, or surrounded by spreading redness. Seek prompt advice for a foot lesion with drainage, fever, or difficulty walking, and do not self-treat a persistent bump if you have diabetes, reduced sensation, or poor circulation.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the bump has the appearance of milia, whether friction is contributing, and which removal method fits its depth and position. You can also ask how to protect the area afterward and what changes would warrant a follow-up visit.

Questions people ask

Can I pop milia on my foot?

No. Popping or cutting it yourself can injure the skin and introduce infection.

Can footwear affect a foot bump?

Repeated rubbing or pressure can irritate the skin and make a small cyst more noticeable.
