Milia on a Newborn’s Face

These tiny white or yellowish bumps can appear on a newborn’s nose, cheeks, chin, or forehead. They are small collections of keratin beneath the surface and are not caused by dirt. Their smooth appearance differs from some other [Skin Bumps](/symptoms/skin-bumps/), but a baby’s rash cannot be diagnosed from a description alone.

Newborn skin is delicate. Popping a bump can create an opening for infection and leave irritation. Avoid adult acne products, exfoliating acids, essential oils, and [Topical Retinoids](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-retinoids/) unless a clinician specifically prescribes a product for the baby.

Clean the face with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser when needed, then pat dry with a soft cloth. Keep fingernails short so accidental scratching is less likely, and avoid rubbing the spots. Do not cover them with thick ointments simply to make them disappear.

Seek prompt advice for a rash with fever or breathing difficulty. Milia themselves are usually calm-looking; a rapid change deserves a separate assessment.
