Milia on the eyelid: treatment options

A milium is a small cyst containing trapped keratin. Eyelid bumps can look similar while arising from an oil gland, inflammation, or another skin change. The treatment plan therefore depends on whether the bump is on the outer lid skin, along the lash line, or on the inner lid. This distinction also determines which products and instruments can be used safely.

A clinician may recommend observation when the bump is harmless and not troublesome. If removal is wanted, careful opening and extraction can release the contents; curettage and cautery may be considered for selected lesions. Topical retinoids are sometimes used for suitable skin conditions, but they can irritate the eyes and should never be started on the eyelid without specific medical instructions. Do not attempt any of these procedures at home.

Book a review if the bump is persistent, recurrent, spreading, or difficult to distinguish from a whitehead. Get prompt care if it becomes inflamed, painful, crusted, or starts draining. Vision disturbance, severe eye pain, or pronounced light sensitivity needs urgent eye assessment rather than a cosmetic appointment.
