Milia on the Eye Rim: What to Know

Milia are small keratin-filled cysts that sit beneath the surface. Near the eye rim, however, a white or skin-coloured bump may involve a lash follicle, an oil gland, or the inner eyelid rather than being milia. Tenderness, swelling, discharge, and crusting suggest irritation or inflammation and deserve a different assessment. A clinician may inspect the lid edge, lashes, and nearby eye surface to identify the lesion without causing injury.

Keep hands, tweezers, needles, and comedone tools away from the rim. Use clean water or a gentle eyelid cleanser as directed, avoid rubbing, and pause eye makeup if it irritates the area. Do not put acids, retinoids, or other spot treatments on the rim unless a clinician gives precise instructions. If the lesion is confirmed as milia and removal is desired, a trained professional can choose a method suited to the narrow margin and surrounding structures.

Contact a clinician promptly for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, bleeding, spreading redness, or repeated crusting. Urgent assessment is needed for blurred or reduced vision, severe eye pain, strong light sensitivity, an eye injury, or swelling that limits opening the eye.
