Milia on Eyelids: What to Know

Milia are firm, pale or skin-coloured cysts just under the surface. Eyelid skin is thin, and a small bump there may also be a blocked gland, a stye, irritation, or another lesion. A stye is more likely to be tender and inflamed, while milia are often not painful, but appearance cannot settle every diagnosis. The exact position matters: a bump on the lid skin is different from one on the inner lid or at the eye margin.

Clean the eyelid gently, avoid rubbing, and remove eye makeup before sleep. Do not squeeze, scrape, lance, or use facial acids or retinoids close to the eye unless an eye or skin clinician has prescribed and positioned the product. If removal is wanted, a trained clinician can assess the site and use an appropriate sterile technique. Curettage and cautery may be considered for selected lesions, while the method depends on distance from the eye and the type of bump.

Seek prompt medical advice if the eyelid is painful, hot, markedly swollen, crusted, or draining, or if redness spreads. Get urgent assessment for vision changes, light sensitivity, severe eye pain, injury, or swelling that makes the eye difficult to open. Arrange a routine review for a persistent, changing, or repeatedly inflamed bump even when vision is normal.
