Milia on Chin: Treatment Options

Milia are small keratin-filled cysts beneath the skin. On the chin, they may be confused with whiteheads, closed comedones, irritation, or tiny cysts of another type. A clinician considers the bump's firmness, colour, depth, number, and any redness before recommending treatment. A few stable, symptom-free milia may be observed. Treatment is more likely to be discussed when the bumps persist, catch on shaving, or cause cosmetic concern.

Use a gentle cleanser and non-irritating moisturiser, and avoid picking, comedone tools, or sharp objects. If a dermatologist confirms milia, a topical retinoid may be considered to support normal shedding in selected cases; it can irritate skin and needs personalised instructions. For a bump that needs prompt removal, a clinician may open and lift out its contents using sterile equipment. Curettage and cautery may be discussed in some settings. Keep the treated area protected from rubbing and follow aftercare advice.

Arrange an appointment if the diagnosis is unclear, the bumps are persistent, or they become tender, red, swollen, crusted, or draining. Prompt assessment is appropriate for rapidly changing lesions, spreading redness, fever, or significant pain. Do not use a retinoid near the lips or on broken skin unless a clinician has explained exactly where it belongs.
