What should you know about milia near lip?

A milium is a small pocket of trapped keratin beneath the skin. It tends to feel firm and look white or pearly, without the tenderness and redness often seen in an inflamed spot. Around the lip, friction, cosmetics, and frequent touching can make the area feel more noticeable. A white bump is not automatically milia, so an examination matters if the surface is rough, sore, crusted, or recurrent.

Milia are not spread by kissing and are not caused by poor hygiene. Pressing on one can break the skin and leave irritation or a dark mark, particularly on skin that readily develops post-inflammatory colour changes.

Use a mild cleanser and avoid scrubbing the lip margin. Do not lance, squeeze, or burn the bump, and do not apply acne products directly to the lips unless a prescriber has explained how to use them. If treatment is wanted, a dermatologist can confirm the diagnosis and remove a suitable lesion with sterile equipment. Topical retinoids may be discussed for selected cases; curettage and cautery are procedural options that require professional judgement and aftercare.

Arrange a review if the lesion grows, becomes painful, bleeds, ulcerates, crusts, or keeps returning in the same place. Prompt care is sensible for rapidly spreading redness, pus, facial swelling, or fever. A sore blistering cluster or a crack at the lip edge may need a different assessment than a firm, isolated milia-like bump.

Ask how the clinician identified the bump, whether treatment could affect the lip border, and what products should be paused before removal. Clarify expected healing, signs of infection, and whether a topical retinoid is appropriate near your mouth.
