What should you know about milia-like cysts?

Milia form when keratin, a protein found in the outer skin, becomes enclosed beneath the surface. They often look like tiny white or pearly beads and feel firm rather than soft. They are different from acne whiteheads because they do not begin as an inflamed, blocked pore. The appearance of a bump alone cannot confirm its cause, so a clinician may examine it if the diagnosis is unclear.

Avoid squeezing, scraping, or piercing the area at home; this can injure delicate skin and leave marks. Use gentle cleansing and non-comedogenic moisturiser, and protect exposed facial skin from sunlight. A dermatologist can discuss observation, a carefully chosen topical retinoid, or a procedure such as curettage and cautery. Treatment near the eye needs particular care.

Arrange a medical review if a bump becomes red, painful, swollen, crusted, bleeds, changes quickly, or affects vision. Seek advice as well when several bumps persist, the diagnosis is uncertain, or you are considering removal near the eyelid. These features can point to another skin problem or to irritation that needs a different approach.
