What should you know about milia in neck?

On the neck, milia usually appear as discrete, smooth, firm white or skin-coloured bumps. They are formed by keratin under the surface and are not the same as infected follicles or acne. Collars, necklaces, fragrance, shaving, and repeated rubbing can irritate the area and make another type of bump more likely.

A clinician can check whether the lesion is truly milia, a small cyst, an inflamed follicle, or a different growth. Mention recent hair removal, new products, sun exposure, and whether the bump is itchy or tender.

Cleanse gently, reduce friction, and stop products that sting or leave the skin inflamed. Avoid squeezing or using needles: neck skin can scar or develop lingering colour changes after injury.

For persistent lesions, a dermatologist may discuss sterile extraction, topical retinoids, or curettage and cautery. The choice depends on lesion depth, nearby hairs, skin sensitivity, and the risk of irritation. Use sunscreen on exposed neck skin after treatment as advised.

Seek assessment if a bump becomes painful, warm, rapidly larger, ulcerated, crusted, or bleeding, or if redness spreads. Arrange a routine appointment when a lesion persists, multiplies, catches on clothing, or changes after a cosmetic or hair-removal procedure. Neck swelling with trouble breathing or swallowing requires urgent care.

Ask whether friction, hair removal, or a product may be contributing and whether the lesion needs treatment. If removal is offered, ask how to protect the neck during healing, how pigment changes are handled, and what signs indicate infection.
