What should you know about milia in mouth?

Milia are keratin-filled cysts that usually form just beneath the skin surface. The lining of the mouth is different from ordinary skin, making a spot on the inner cheek, gum, tongue, or palate less typical for milia. A pale or white mouth bump may instead be caused by irritation, a blocked gland, a cyst, a canker, infection, or another oral lesion.

Note the exact position, colour, texture, and duration. Mention cheek biting, a sharp tooth, dental work, tobacco or vaping, and any pain or bleeding. A dentist, doctor, or oral-medicine clinician can inspect the lesion directly.

Do not pop, scrape, burn, or apply facial retinoids to a mouth lesion. Keep brushing gently, avoid tobacco and foods that clearly aggravate it, and use ordinary hydration while arranging an assessment.

Treatment depends on the diagnosis. A clinician may simply monitor a harmless lesion, manage irritation, or recommend a procedure when appropriate. Curettage and cautery are not self-care options and are not suitable for every oral bump.

Seek prompt care for difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling, fever, severe pain, pus, uncontrolled bleeding, or swelling that extends into the face or neck. Arrange a dental or medical review for a sore, firm, bleeding, or changing lesion, or any mouth spot that does not settle.
