Milia on dark skin: what to know

Milia form when keratin, a protein found in the outer skin, becomes enclosed beneath the surface. They often appear around the eyelids, cheeks, nose, or forehead and usually feel smooth rather than tender. On deeper skin tones, the colour contrast may be subtle, so texture can be easier to notice than whiteness. Milia are different from inflamed acne, although several types of facial bumps can look similar.

Use a gentle cleanser and avoid picking, needles, harsh scrubs, or squeezing, especially near the eyes. A dermatologist can confirm the diagnosis and discuss a carefully chosen topical retinoid or a procedure such as curettage and cautery. Ask how the plan will reduce irritation and the chance of temporary dark or light marks, which can be more noticeable after skin injury.

Arrange a skin assessment if a bump bleeds, becomes painful, crusted, swollen, rapidly changes, or affects vision. Seek advice when many new bumps appear, the diagnosis is uncertain, or home care has caused redness or a persistent mark.
