Milia Bumps on Hands: What to Know

Milia are keratin-filled cysts that commonly feel smooth, hard, and rounded. Hands are exposed to washing, chemicals, friction, and minor injury, so a bump in this area may instead reflect irritation, a blocked follicle, a wart, or another skin problem. Milia do not behave exactly like whiteheads: they are not generally soft plugs that can be expressed. A clinician can inspect the surface and surrounding skin before recommending treatment.

Wash with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, then moisturise after handwashing. Wear suitable gloves when handling irritating cleaning products, while avoiding prolonged dampness inside gloves. Resist picking or cutting the bumps. If they remain, catch on objects, or affect your confidence, a dermatologist may discuss a topical retinoid or a brief in-clinic procedure such as curettage and cautery, depending on the diagnosis and location.

Book a non-urgent appointment if a hand bump lasts, multiplies, or changes after repeated irritation. Seek prompt care for marked swelling, increasing warmth, pus, severe pain, unexplained bleeding, or difficulty moving a finger. A painful or inflamed lesion may need care for a cause other than milia.
