Milia Bumps on Arms: What to Know

Milia often feel like tiny beads just beneath the surface and are not usually tender or inflamed. On the arms, a clinician may also consider keratosis pilaris, blocked follicles, a healing skin injury, or another type of skin bump. Location alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. A close look helps distinguish milia from whiteheads, which are linked to a pore and may occur with other acne changes.

Do not pierce, squeeze, or scrape the bumps yourself; this can injure the skin and leave marks. Use a gentle cleanser and a plain moisturiser, and avoid harsh scrubs. If the bumps persist or bother you, a dermatologist can confirm what they are. Depending on the finding, treatment may include a prescribed topical retinoid or in-clinic removal such as curettage and cautery.

Arrange a routine skin assessment if the bumps are spreading, recurring, changing, or not improving with gentle care. Seek prompt medical attention if a spot becomes rapidly larger, very painful, hot, drains pus, bleeds without a clear reason, or is accompanied by fever. These features are not typical of uncomplicated milia and need a different assessment.
