Milia Around Nose: What to Know

A milium is a small cyst containing keratin beneath the skin surface. Near the nose it may look like a bright white, solid pinpoint, while a blocked pore often has a visible opening or a different texture. Several bumps can appear together. Oiliness, rubbing, thick products, or irritation may make the area feel congested, but appearance alone cannot establish the cause. A close examination is useful when the bump is inflamed, unusual, or not behaving like a typical milium.

Cleanse without scrubbing and choose non-irritating moisturiser around the nostrils. Avoid pressing with nails, needles, pore strips, or extraction devices; the nose can mark easily and the skin barrier may break. If the lesion remains, a dermatologist can make a small sterile opening and remove it, or discuss curettage and cautery for a suitable lesion. A topical retinoid may be considered for some patterns, though it can cause dryness and should be kept away from the nostril opening unless prescribed there. Introduce only one new product at a time so irritation is easier to identify.

Arrange a review if the bump is painful, hot, increasingly red, draining, crusted, bleeding, or changing shape. Seek prompt care for swelling that affects breathing, fever with spreading redness, or severe tenderness around the nose. A lesion that persists despite gentle care or repeatedly appears in one spot should also be examined.

Ask whether the lesion is milia or a blocked pore, whether any current product is contributing to irritation, which treatment fits its depth, and how to prevent rubbing during recovery.
