Milia Around Eyes Removal: What to Know

Milia are firm, tiny white or skin-coloured cysts containing trapped keratin, a protein found in the outer layer of skin. They are not the same as acne, even when they resemble a whitehead. Around the eyes, the skin is thin and close to the eyelid, so squeezing, scraping, or piercing a bump at home can injure the skin or introduce infection. A clinician may use a light and close examination to distinguish milia from other eyelid bumps.

If the bump is bothersome or does not settle, a dermatology appointment can help. The clinician may open the surface with a sterile instrument and gently lift out the contents. Curettage and cautery is another procedure that may be considered for selected lesions; the method depends on the bump, its depth, and its position. A prescribed topical retinoid may help some milia patterns, but products near the eyes need specific medical instructions. Keep cleansers gentle, avoid rubbing the eyelids, and pause harsh exfoliants until the area has been assessed.

Arrange an examination if a bump is painful, red, swollen, leaking, rapidly changing, or affecting vision. Seek prompt care for marked eyelid swelling, severe tenderness, fever, or redness spreading around the eye. A new bump that bleeds or repeatedly returns also deserves a clinician’s review because not every white eyelid bump is milia.
