Short answer

Migraine trigger-point massage may ease muscle tension for some people, but it should be gentle and is not a substitute for assessment or treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What trigger-point massage means

Trigger points are tender, tight areas in muscles, often around the neck, shoulders, scalp or jaw. Pressure or slow rubbing may relax a tense area and reduce discomfort that accompanies a migraine. It does not remove the neurological processes that cause migraine, and forceful pressure can worsen head or neck pain.

A migraine can include headache, nausea, vomiting, light sensitivity, dizziness or vertigo. Massage may feel unpleasant during an intense attack, especially when touch or movement is a trigger. The response varies from one person to another.

How to try it safely

If touch feels comfortable, use light pressure with slow movements for a short period. Stop if pain, nausea, dizziness or visual symptoms increase. Keep your neck in a neutral position, avoid pressing on the front of the neck, and do not use massage to delay prescribed care. A trained professional should know about your migraine pattern and any neck problems before treatment.

Record whether massage was used before or during an attack and what happened afterward. This can help you and your clinician decide whether it belongs in your personal plan.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for a sudden, severe headache, a new headache after a head injury, fainting, confusion, weakness, trouble speaking, fever with a stiff neck, or repeated vomiting. Arrange a clinical review when headaches are new, changing, frequent, or not responding to your usual plan. Facial pain and pressure or persistent dizziness also deserve assessment rather than repeated self-massage.

Questions for your doctor

Could muscle tension be contributing to my attacks? Is massage suitable with my neck or jaw symptoms? What warning signs mean I should stop self-care? Which medicines, exercises or preventive options could complement my plan?
