What should you know about MEC chemotherapy?

MEC is an abbreviation used for a chemotherapy combination, but the letters can be used differently in different protocols. Ask your oncology team to name each medicine, explain its role, and confirm whether treatment is given in a clinic or hospital. The plan may be used to treat a known cancer, reduce disease before another treatment, or control cancer that has returned.

Chemotherapy can affect healthy fast-growing cells as well as cancer cells. Possible effects include tiredness, nausea, mouth soreness, changes in blood counts, infection risk, and hair changes. Your team will tailor medicines and monitoring to your regimen and health.

Ask for the written regimen, treatment dates, blood-test schedule, medicines for nausea, and an emergency contact number. Tell the team about allergies, infections, dental problems, pregnancy or fertility concerns, and every medicine or supplement you take. Follow instructions about eating, drinking, and central-line care when provided.

Keep a record of temperature, symptoms, fluid intake, and medicines. Never add or stop a medicine without checking, because interactions can change safety. Chemotherapy is used across different cancers, including Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, Bladder Cancer, Breast Cancer, and some other conditions, but the protocol is not interchangeable between them.

Call the oncology team urgently for a fever, chills, unusual bleeding, black stools, severe diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, or shortness of breath. Seek emergency care for chest pain, collapse, severe confusion, or difficulty breathing. Do not wait for the next appointment when symptoms are sudden or worsening; the team may need to check blood counts, infection, dehydration, or an infusion reaction.
