What should you know about MARS MRI scan?

Short answer

A MARS MRI scan uses specialised metal artefact reduction techniques to make images clearer near implants or other metal.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why metal reduction matters

Metal can distort the magnetic signals used to create MRI images, leaving dark areas or streaks that hide nearby bone and soft tissue. MARS methods adjust scan settings and image processing to reduce this distortion. They can be useful around joint replacements, fixation hardware, dental work, or other implants, although image quality may still vary.

The scan does not identify a diagnosis on its own. A radiologist interprets the images alongside your symptoms, examination, prior scans, and other tests. Depending on the clinical question, a standard MRI Scan, Biopsy, or another investigation may also be needed.

Preparing for the appointment

Tell the imaging team about every implant, surgical clip, metal fragment, pump, hearing device, or implanted electronic device, including its make if known. Remove metal objects and follow instructions about clothing, food, or contrast dye. Remain still while the scanner makes loud tapping sounds; headphones or ear protection are usually provided.

Mention kidney problems, allergies, pregnancy, and claustrophobia before the scan. Ask whether contrast is planned and what alternatives exist if you cannot remain comfortably in the scanner. The MRI Scanner page explains the equipment and safety screening in more detail.

When to seek care

Tell staff immediately if you feel burning, pulling, severe discomfort, dizziness, or panic during the scan. After contrast, seek urgent help for breathing trouble, facial swelling, or widespread hives. Contact your clinician about persistent pain, swelling, or new neurological symptoms rather than waiting for the scan report.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what metal is affecting the image, whether MARS is available for your body area, if contrast is needed, and when the report will be discussed. Ask what additional test would clarify an abnormal finding.

Questions people ask

Does MARS MRI remove the metal from my body?

No. It changes scan technique and processing to reduce the metal's effect on the images.

Can every implant be scanned?

No. Safety depends on the exact device, its location, and the scanner conditions; imaging staff must check first.
