Lupus and light sensitivity: what should you know?

Many people with lupus notice that sunlight worsens skin rashes, fatigue, joint symptoms, or other flare features. Bright light may also feel uncomfortable to the eyes, with watering, squinting, or a need to seek shade. Sensitivity can involve sunlight, fluorescent lighting, or screens, and its pattern may change over time. Eye pain, marked redness, or blurred vision needs a separate assessment because light sensitivity can also occur with eye inflammation, conjunctivitis, migraine, or meningitis.

Use shade, tightly woven clothing, a broad-brimmed hat, sunglasses that block ultraviolet light, and sunscreen on exposed skin. Reapply sunscreen as directed, including when outdoors for a short time. Keep a simple record of light exposure, skin changes, eye symptoms, fatigue, and medicines. Arrange a review with the clinician managing your lupus if sensitivity is new, worsening, or interfering with daily activities; do not stop prescribed treatment without advice.

Seek urgent medical help for severe eye pain, sudden vision change, a severe headache with neck stiffness, confusion, fever, or a rapidly worsening rash with feeling very unwell. Contact your usual clinician soon if light sensitivity persists, follows a medication change, or accompanies new joint swelling, chest discomfort, or unusual weakness.
