What should you know about lip milia removal?

Milia are tiny, firm, usually white or skin-coloured cysts containing trapped keratin. Around the lips they can resemble whiteheads or other skin bumps, so appearance alone does not always establish the diagnosis. They are not the same as a typical acne spot and may not respond to ordinary acne squeezing.

A clinician can examine the bump and consider its position, firmness, duration, and surrounding skin. Irritation from lip products, trauma, or a previous skin treatment may influence the area. Do not puncture, scrape, or burn a spot close to the lip yourself.

Professional removal may involve opening the surface with a sterile instrument and gently releasing the cyst. Curettage and cautery is another clinician-led option in selected cases. A topical retinoid may be considered when milia are recurrent or numerous, but the lip margin is sensitive and treatment must be prescribed and used carefully.

Keep the area clean, avoid picking, and use bland moisturiser if advised. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, eczema, cold sores, medicines, and products that have caused burning before. Ask how long to avoid lipstick, exfoliants, or fragranced products after removal.

Arrange an assessment if a bump bleeds, crusts, becomes painful, grows quickly, repeatedly returns in the same place, or is associated with a persistent sore. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, pus, fever, or marked swelling after an attempted removal.
