Short answer

Light sensitivity symptoms mean that ordinary indoor or outdoor light feels uncomfortable, painful, or difficult to tolerate; the symptom can occur with migraine, eye irritation, medication effects, or a more urgent illness.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

You may squint, shield your eyes, prefer dim rooms, or develop headache, nausea, blurred vision, or eye watering. The meaning depends on how quickly it started, whether one or both eyes are affected, and what other symptoms are present.

What light sensitivity can mean

Light sensitivity, also called photophobia, is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. Bright sunlight, glare from screens, fluorescent lighting, and reflections can all make it more noticeable. A migraine may cause light sensitivity alongside throbbing head pain, nausea, or visual changes.

Eye conditions can also make light painful. Redness, discharge, a gritty feeling, or swollen eyelids can occur with conjunctivitis, while pain deep in the eye or reduced vision needs prompt assessment. Fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, confusion, or a new rash can signal meningitis and should be treated as an emergency.

What you can do now

Move to a comfortably dim room and reduce glare rather than sitting in complete darkness for long periods. Sunglasses can help outdoors, and a hat or cap can limit overhead light. Lower screen brightness, increase text size, take regular breaks, and keep screens at a comfortable distance.

Rest, drink fluids, and record when the symptom began, what light triggered it, and whether headache, eye redness, fever, or vision changes followed. Do not use another person’s eye drops. If a prescribed medicine appears to trigger the problem, contact the prescriber before changing or stopping it.

When to seek care

Get urgent medical help for sudden or severe eye pain, new vision loss, a severe headache unlike your usual headaches, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting, weakness, fever with neck stiffness, or a new rash. Seek prompt assessment if light sensitivity follows an eye injury or occurs with marked redness or unequal pupils.

Arrange a clinical review when the symptom is new, keeps returning, lasts beyond a short illness, interferes with work or sleep, or does not improve after removing an obvious trigger. An examination can check the eyes, vision, nervous system, medicines, and headache pattern.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Could this be related to my eyes, migraine, a medicine, or another illness? Do I need an eye or neurological examination? Which symptoms should send me to urgent care? What can I safely use for comfort while the cause is being assessed?

Questions people ask

Can light sensitivity be part of a migraine?

Yes. Migraine can include discomfort from light, often together with headache, nausea, or visual symptoms. A new or unusually severe pattern needs medical assessment.

Should I wear sunglasses indoors for light sensitivity?

Sunglasses may help briefly, but constant darkening can make ordinary light harder to tolerate for some people. Use comfortable lighting and reduce glare while arranging care if the symptom persists.

When is light sensitivity an emergency?

Seek emergency help when it comes with severe eye pain, vision loss, confusion, a severe new headache, or fever and neck stiffness.
