Light sensitivity and meningitis: what to know

Meningitis is inflammation around the brain and spinal cord. A person with meningitis may develop light sensitivity with a severe or worsening headache, fever, vomiting, neck stiffness, confusion, unusual drowsiness, or a new rash. Some symptoms can appear together or develop quickly. Light sensitivity alone is more often linked with other problems, such as migraine or an irritated eye, and cannot diagnose meningitis.

Migraine commonly presents with sensitivity to light and may include nausea or visual symptoms, while conjunctivitis may include redness, discharge, and a gritty feeling. These patterns can overlap, so a person who is acutely unwell should be assessed rather than relying on a symptom comparison.

If light sensitivity is new and you feel ill, stay with someone if possible, move away from harsh light, and arrange urgent medical help. Do not drive yourself when headache, confusion, weakness, or vision changes affect you. Keep a list of medicines and allergies available, but do not delay emergency care while collecting information.

Call emergency services immediately for light sensitivity with fever and a stiff neck, a severe headache, confusion, collapse, a seizure, repeated vomiting, marked drowsiness, or a rash that does not fade when pressed. Babies and young children may instead be unusually sleepy, irritable, difficult to settle, or feeding poorly. Trust a rapid change in how someone looks or behaves.
