Leisegang colposcope: what to know

A colposcope stays outside the vagina while a clinician uses its light and magnification to view the cervix more closely. Leisegang is a manufacturer name; the device supports the examination but does not diagnose a condition by itself.

During colposcopy, the clinician may apply solutions that make unusual areas easier to see. If an area needs clarification, a small biopsy may be taken. The findings help determine whether monitoring, another test, or treatment is appropriate.

Follow the clinic’s instructions and tell the team about pregnancy, bleeding, allergies, medicines, or previous cervical procedures. You may find it more comfortable to avoid vaginal products or intercourse before the appointment if the clinic advises this.

During the examination, ask the clinician to explain each step, whether a biopsy is planned, and how results will be shared. Bring questions about discomfort, support, and activity after the appointment.

Mild spotting or period-like discomfort can occur after a biopsy. Contact the clinic if bleeding is heavy or persistent, pain is severe or worsening, discharge smells unpleasant, or you develop fever or feel unwell. Follow the discharge instructions for when to avoid vaginal activity and when to return.

Ask why colposcopy was recommended, what the colposcope will show, whether a biopsy or treatment may be needed, and when results are expected. If an abnormal area is found, ask how loop excision of the cervix compares with monitoring or other options.
