Left-Side Pain During Sex

Left-sided pain during sex can have several causes, and recurring or deep pain deserves a clinical assessment. Pain may be at the vaginal opening, deeper in the pelvis, or felt afterward. Its location, timing, lubrication, position, and relationship to periods can help separate surface irritation from deeper pelvic pain.

Dryness or delicate tissue can make penetration sting, while pelvic-floor muscle tightening can create aching or sharp pain. Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause, Lichen Sclerosus, and Vulvodynia can affect the vulval or vaginal area. Deeper one-sided pain may occur with Endometriosis, an Ovarian Endometrioma, or Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. Pain during sex is a symptom, not a diagnosis, so an examination is often needed.

Stop or change activity when pain begins; continuing through pain can increase muscle guarding. Allow more time for arousal, use a suitable lubricant, and try positions that control depth. Avoid scented products on the vulva. Arrange an appointment if pain returns, causes bleeding, or affects intimacy. Seek urgent care for severe pelvic pain, fever, vomiting, faintness, heavy bleeding, or feeling suddenly very unwell. Prompt assessment is also needed for pain with a possible pregnancy, new foul-smelling discharge, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Do not assume the left-sided location identifies the cause; urgency comes from the accompanying features and severity.

Ask whether the pain is superficial or deep, whether you need tests for infection or an ultrasound, and whether pelvic-floor tension could contribute.
