What should you know about laughter induced asthma?

Short answer
Laughter-induced asthma describes asthma symptoms that start or worsen after laughing, often because rapid airflow irritates narrowed airways.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common trigger
- Rapid breathing during laughter
- Possible symptoms
- Cough, wheezing and chest tightness
- Next step
- Review recurring episodes with a clinician
What it means
A burst of laughter can make you breathe quickly through your mouth. Cool, dry air may then reach sensitive airways, causing the muscles around them to tighten and the lining to swell. Cough, wheezing or chest tightness may follow. A laughter trigger does not by itself confirm asthma; similar symptoms can come from other airway conditions.
Notice whether symptoms also occur with exercise, allergies, smoke, cold air or infections. A clinician may ask about timing, listen to your chest and arrange breathing tests. Asthma can occur alongside allergic rhinitis or house dust mite allergy.
What you can do
Use your prescribed reliever exactly as instructed and keep it available when symptoms have happened before. Pause the activity, sit upright and take calm breaths. Do not borrow another person’s inhaler or start regular treatment without an assessment.
Record the trigger, symptoms, duration and any medicine used. A written asthma plan can explain which inhaler to use and when to seek help. Nebuliser treatment may be considered by clinicians for some acute attacks.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help if breathing is rapidly worsening, you cannot speak comfortably, your lips look blue or grey, you feel faint, or your reliever is not helping as directed. Arrange a routine review if laughter repeatedly causes cough, wheezing or chest tightness, even when episodes settle.
Questions for your doctor
Could these episodes be asthma, and would breathing tests help? Should I use a reliever before known triggers? How can I tell a mild episode from an emergency? Could allergies or another cause be contributing?

Questions people ask
Can laughter cause an asthma attack?
Laughter can trigger symptoms in some people with asthma by causing rapid airflow and airway narrowing.
Does laughter-induced coughing prove I have asthma?
No. Repeated cough after laughter deserves assessment because several airway problems can produce similar symptoms.
