What should you know about the latest MRI scan machine?

The latest MRI scan machines may improve image quality, speed, comfort, or access, but the right scanner depends on the body area and clinical question. A newer model is not automatically necessary for every examination.

MRI uses magnets and radio waves rather than ionising radiation. Scanner design, software, coils, and motion-correction tools can affect detail and scan time. Some systems have a wider opening or quieter sequences. Contrast may be recommended for selected questions, while other examinations do not need it. An MRI can help assess areas such as the brain, but it cannot by itself confirm cancer; interpretation and, when needed, tissue sampling are separate steps.

Tell the imaging team about pacemakers, metal fragments, implants, clips, medication pumps, pregnancy, kidney problems, and previous reactions to contrast. Remove metal items and follow instructions about food or drink. If enclosed spaces worry you, ask about preparation options before the appointment. Contact the imaging service promptly if an implant or metal fragment was not discussed before scanning. During or after contrast, seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, faintness, or a widespread rash. New neurological symptoms such as weakness, confusion, or a severe sudden headache need urgent medical assessment regardless of the scan date.

Ask what the scan is intended to show, whether contrast is needed, how long positioning may take, and when results will be reviewed. Ask whether an alternative test is suitable if you have an implant, cannot lie still, or find enclosed spaces difficult.
