What should you know about laser hair removal and electrolysis together?

Laser targets pigment in many actively growing hairs and is often used over a larger area. Electrolysis treats individual follicles with an electrical current and can be useful for hairs that do not respond well to laser. Using both does not mean they should be performed on the same skin at the same appointment; irritated skin needs time to settle.

Have the clinician map the areas, hair colours, skin tone, medicines, and history of scarring or pigmentation changes. Avoid plucking or waxing before laser if the plan depends on the hair root being present; follow the clinic’s specific preparation advice. Discuss whether conditions such as hirsutism, razor bumps, ingrown hairs, or hidradenitis suppurativa need separate care. Laser types may include Alexandrite Laser, Diode Laser, or Nd:YAG Laser.

Ask for review if redness lasts longer than expected, blisters, crusting, marked swelling, pus, worsening pain, or unusual light or dark patches develop. Pause treatment on skin with an active infection, open wound, or unexplained rash until it has been assessed.
