Laryngitis caused by acid reflux: what helps?

Acid reflux can irritate the voice box and contribute to laryngitis, hoarseness, throat clearing, or cough. Reflux-related symptoms may be worse after meals, when bending, or when lying down, although heartburn is not always present. Other causes of voice change still need consideration.

The voice box is sensitive tissue. Stomach contents moving upward can irritate it and increase the urge to cough or clear the throat, which adds further friction. Limit personal triggers such as late meals, alcohol, tobacco, or foods that clearly worsen symptoms. Raise the head end of the bed if advised, and avoid repeated throat clearing. A pharmacist or clinician can explain whether an acid-reducing medicine is suitable and how it should be used.

Arrange a clinical assessment if hoarseness lasts, returns often, or does not improve with reflux measures. Seek urgent help for severe chest pain, breathing difficulty, vomiting blood, black stools, faintness, or inability to swallow. Discuss ongoing symptoms with a clinician, particularly if you have unplanned weight change, persistent vomiting, or pain when swallowing. They may consider reflux, voice overuse, infection, medication effects, or another throat condition.

Ask whether your pattern fits reflux-related voice irritation, whether another cause should be checked, and how long to try a treatment. Mention night symptoms, meal timing, swallowing pain, chest symptoms, tobacco use, and any medicines that affect digestion.
