Lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor. It lowers the amount of acid released into the stomach, giving irritated food-pipe tissue an opportunity to settle. Take it exactly as prescribed and follow the product instructions about timing with food. Swallow the capsule or tablet as directed rather than changing its form without advice. Keep a list of medicines and supplements, because lansoprazole can interact with some treatments. Smaller meals, avoiding personal trigger foods and leaving time between eating and lying down may reduce symptoms.

Seek urgent help for chest tightness with breathlessness, sweating, faintness or pain spreading to the arm or jaw. Arrange prompt review for trouble swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, repeated vomiting, unexplained weight loss or symptoms that do not improve. A new persistent cough also deserves assessment rather than automatic attribution to reflux.
